RockShox SID Team Review

RockShox SID Team Fork

rockshox-sidWhen it comes to racing, the RockShox SID has very few equals and the fact that the RockShox SID is the most successful fork ever on the World Cup cross-country circuit proves that to be true. That said, the RockShox SID was getting long in the tooth and due for a much needed overhaul. The old RockShox SID team fork was an amazing piece of equipment, but the NEW RockShox SID team fork is even better.

The RockShox SID series of forks was/is a wildly popular fork however two issues always seem to arise when it came to this fork, it was superlight but also too flexible and sometimes unpredictable on the trail when the terrain turned to the technical side. The 2009 RockShox SID remedies that issue making the RockShox SID team fork possibly the best mountain bike fork on the market.

The 2009 RockShox SID has grown in size in order to stiffen the chassis and make it less flexy. The SID sports straight walled 7000 series aluminum stanchions that have been beefed up from 28mm to 32mm providing much more strength where it needs it. The lowers are cast from magnesium and they sport a heavily bolstered arch and the Power Bulge reinforcements around the lower bushings to combat flex. Last but not least, the crown has a wider stance and is made of forged AL66 aluminum. A solid and beefy package that puts to rest any of the naysayers claims that the RockShox SID is too flexy for technical terrain. The SID accomplishes this while maintaining a light weight chassis that is highly tuneable and sports very effective internals that will keep it at the top of many racers wish list.

RockShox SID Weight

rockshoxsidtireRockShox increased the dimensions of the SID in order to make it stronger and they did an admirable job of keeping the weight down with slightly shorter stanchions and internal shaft lengths. RockShox was hoping to match the older design SID's weight on the scale however they did not accomplish that. Our scale showed the latest version of the SID to weight in at 1585 grams vs 1375 grams for older SIDs. For us metric system challenged people that's just under a half a pound.

What that translates to is almost nothing. The only ones who might complain about this are the weight weenies but most would agree that the increased weight is well worth the improved performance and durability. The new RockShox SID is an entirely different animal on the trail and is head and shoulders better than previous incarnations. No more vague steering or floppy handling or poor braking when the terrain turns technical.

Instead the RockShox SID is extremely confidence inspiring and secure and will go exactly where you point it and follow the line nicely. Even on the most technical of terrain, the RockShox SID performed admirably compared to it's predecessor.

As if the improved rigidity and handling weren't enough, RockShox also improved on the internals of the SID. Improving on the previous design is no easy matter, as the SID was considered an extremely well proven and very tunable fork but they weren't going to settle for status quo. The RockShox SID sports the Dual Air spring system and an updated Motion Control damper system that produces outstanding tunability and superb ride characteristics and bump control.

RockShox SID Cons

rockshoxsidcompressionThe negatives are few and far between on the RockShox SID as it is a superb all around performer. If we had to look for something to complain about we would have a hard time. The adjuster knob for the rebound is a bit difficult to grip and operate if you have big fingers but quite frankly if that is the only complaint then you know RockShox hit the mark with this fork. I guess we could say that the Pushloc remote lockout was a little bit stubborn and didn't want to return to open unless we took weight off the front but like I said, this Shock is GOOD if this is the kind of thing we complain about.

To summarize, the RockShox SID is a superb all around performer and if you've been thinking of upgrading your old SID or other brand shock, then I would say positively and absolutely the new RockShox SID is a superb example of what a Suspension fork should be and I would recommend it without hesitation to anyone.

    Jaques Els Says:

I bought a new Specilized Epic Carbon mountain bike, that had the RockShox SID Team as part of the package. I used the bicycle mainly for Cross country, in the United Kingdom.

The fork only lasted 5 months, even though it’s never even seen a Mountain, only UK Trails.

How can a fork be worn out in 5 months?

I would definetely not recommend this fork to anyone, unless you want to waste money and buy a new fork every 5 months.

I am happy to post photoes or answer any questions concerning.
