RockShox Revelation Shock
RockShox is a name you trust when it comes to Mountain Bike suspension forks and the RockShox Revelation is a nice offering that comes in right between the race oriented RockShox Reba and the built for a beating RockShox Pike. The RockShox Revelation might be one of the most overlooked forks on the market, not because it is not a great fork but simply because it's own brother and sister forks outshadow it in their marketing efforts.
The 2009 Revelation is aiming to fix that oversight and is causing a family feud in the RockShox lineup. It's accomplishing this by being very good at what BOTH of the other shocks are oriented for and offering surprisingly good performance in each category.
The specific model that we tested was the RockShox Revelation 426 model, which utilizes a dual air spring offering both positive and negative adjustment. RockShox's patented "U-Turn" system enables the rider to adjust the fork’s travel without changing the spring rate. What this means is that you can screw the shock down to the 110mm (4.3in) travel setting and it feels like a rugged short travel fork, but then when you release it to the full 140mm (5.5in) setting, it transforms into a black hole for trail obstacles and swallows up any sign of bumps or bangs. The best of both worlds.
The RockShox 426 offers "Motion Control damping" and rebound adjustment and is capped off by a T6 aluminum crown. The crown on the 426 is almost as beefy as the RockShox Pike crown but just maybe on a bit of a diet. The lower fork legs feature the RockShox Power Bulge for extra strength and durability and the shock includes a Maxle Lite 20mm axle system as well as a quick release option. Nice.
A word of caution here, the RockShox Revelation resembles a slimmed down Pike and definitely inspires confidence so you might get carried away. We would remind you that this is still a trail fork and not an all mountain or a free ride fork. It's rugged and the ride is amazing but know the limits and make sure you stay within them or you could find yourself disappointed. Trust us...the RockShox Revelation makes it easy to get carried away but it isn't a free ride fork, and if you ride it too hard, it could get you in trouble in the really rough stuff.
The RockShox Revelation will take a hammering but still offers a silky smooth ride and superb and reliable damping qualities. In our opinion, the RockShox Revelation is a superb choice for an trail/mountain style shock that will provide similar peformance to what took two shocks to accomplish before.
